A section of the Cleveland Way runs along the coast at Skinningrove. Follow it as far as Saltburn to the north and Staithes to the south for magnificent cliff-side scenery. Get your boots on! The Museum shop also stocks a number of local walk leaflets. |

See how the community in Skinningrove is cleaning up Kilton Beck. Following the closure of the ironstone mines in the late 1950's, water began to build up within the shafts, absorbing iron from the stone, and eventually it flowed into Kilton Beck. The Beck through the the villages became extensively stained red, as the natural process of the stream aerates the minewater, changing the ironstone back into a solid. A trial filter was installed in the Beck near the Museum entrance and the permanent filter will be running from November 2000. See more details on the Skinningrove Community pages:

PUBLIC HOUSES: There are two pubs in the village: Timms Coffee House (which serves a very popular Sunday lunch, and other meals with prior booking) The Kilton Arms (which serves lunch and snacks until about 2pm daily) FANTASTIC FISH: Great Fish and Chips can be found in Carlin How and in Loftus. Alternatively, there are a number of good bakers and other food outlets in Loftus. |
