Bat Walks in Skinningrove with Cleveland Bat Group
31st October 2026 - 31st October 2026
Join Land of Iron and Cleveland Bat Group for one of two remaining evenings exploring Skinningrove’s bats during autumn 2026.
Our first walk produced more than 300 bat-call detections, representing at least six species. Two further walks offer more opportunities to discover which bats are active around the village and beck.
Commonly associated with deep, dark caves, bats can also make use of abandoned mines and other artificial habitats. These special evening events offer an opportunity to learn more about our local bats, and then head outside to listen for them.
The evening will begin at Land of Iron with a short presentation introducing these amazing animals, the species that can be found in the local area and some of the ways they can be identified.
We will then head out into Skinningrove, walking through Doorstep Green and crossing the footbridge to the opposite side of the beck.
Along the way, we will use specialist bat-detection equipment to listen for and identify the different calls and signals made by bats as they move through the landscape.
The Bat Walks are being delivered with Cleveland Bat Group.
Our first Bat Walk took place on 12 September, when more than 300 bat-call detections and at least six species were recorded around Skinningrove, and our second happened on 19 September. Discover what we recorded during our first Bat Walk
Our second

The evening begins with a short presentation at the museum before the group heads out into the village.
The walking route is fully accessible.
Please bring a waterproof jacket and wear warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking. The ground may be wet, particularly if it has been raining.
Please leave dogs at home, as they can be disruptive to bats, which rely heavily on sound to navigate and find food.
These events take place during the quieter hours of the evening. Visitors are asked to respect the peace and privacy of Skinningrove’s residents, as well as the animals living in and around the village.
Bats are sensible creatures and do not like coming out in the rain.
If the weather is poor, Land of Iron reserves the right to cancel the event and refund ticket holders.
Under-18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
