Dr Steve Sherlock: Research & Excavations at Street House 2026 – Tom Leonard Lecture Series
16th October 2026 - 16th October 2026
Dr Steve Sherlock returns to Land of Iron for the Tom Leonard Lecture Series, revealing the latest discoveries from the 2026 archaeological excavations at Street House.
This year's programme of excavations focused on a site identified through a recent geophysical survey. Archaeologists uncovered an enormous stone cairn, around 17 metres in diameter, believed to date from the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age.
Made up of thousands of beach pebbles laid in several layers, the monument is surrounded by a ditch and includes a number of burnt charcoal deposits around its edges. More than 150 flint tools have also been recovered, providing further clues to activity at the site thousands of years ago.
The discovery adds another fascinating chapter to the remarkable prehistoric landscape around Street House, where previous excavations have revealed a number of important sites and monuments.
Steve will discuss the results of this year's extensive digging and research, how the newly discovered cairn compares with earlier discoveries in the area, and what the finds may tell us about the people who created these monuments.
The talk will also include some newly discovered Roman finds from Street House.
