From Neolithic Salt to a Saxon Princess with Dr Steve Sherlock
6th April 2026 - 4th July 2026
For over 6,000 years, the fields of Street House in Loftus have been a hub of community life and work. A new temporary exhibition at Land of Iron, presented by Dr Stephen Sherlock, highlights insights from recent excavations that reveal significant local discoveries across various eras.
The findings reveal Neolithic stone art that highlights ancient creativity, as well as Bronze Age stone circles that suggest ritual significance. Additionally, Iron Age farms offer insights into agricultural practices of the time. There is also evidence of early salt-making, which underscores its importance to the local economy. Roman activities illustrate the impact of Imperial Rome on local life, emphasising trade and cultural exchange. This narrative continues into the Saxon period, where discoveries include shields and seaxes.
Together, these discoveries illustrate the rich tapestry of human history in the fields of Street House and demonstrate how communities have thrived in East Cleveland over millennia.
Land of Iron’s programme of events and activities is made possible thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery players.
Admission is included with regular museum entry.
