Discover the ironstone mining history of Liverton on this guided heritage walk from Land of Iron.

The 3.5-mile route travels through woodland and across Loftus Bank towards the former Liverton Mine, exploring the landscape shaped by the area’s mining past.

About Liverton Mine

Located near Loftus, Liverton Mine began production in the 1870s and continued working until its closure in 1923.

There were later discussions about reopening the mine, but these ended with the outbreak of the Second World War. Further working eventually became possible through connections with the nearby Kilton Mine.

Liverton Mine formed part of the wider ironstone industry that influenced the economic and domestic development of East Cleveland.

The walk

The walk begins at the Land of Iron car park before heading into the woodland at Whitecliff and across Loftus Bank.

The route is approximately 3.5 miles and is expected to take between three and four hours.

It includes one very steep and uneven climb, with the potential for muddy ground following wet weather. Approximately one mile of the route involves road or urban walking, including sections beside and across active roads. Participants will need to remain aware of traffic and follow the walk leader’s instructions.

What to bring

Please wear sturdy walking boots with good grip and clothing suitable for the weather.

Bring enough drinking water for the full walk, as drinking water will not be available along the route.
