SKGR – Skinningrove Roman Day: Family Crafts & Activities
26th August 2026 - 26th August 2026
The Romans are taking over Land of Iron for a day of exciting, hands-on activities for children!
Discover what life was like in Roman Britain as you excavate archaeological finds, decorate your own legionary shield, craft a Roman oil lamp and learn how Roman soldiers marched into battle.
There will be plenty to make, discover and take home throughout the day.
Learn how archaeologists excavate and identify historic finds with help from our museum team. Discover how the professionals do it in a child-friendly setting – and expect muddy fingers!
How did the Romans light their homes? Discover the key features of a Roman oil lamp before sculpting one of your own to take home.
Decorate your own Roman legionary shield and learn why different images and colours were important to Roman soldiers.
Bring the shield you have made – or borrow one of ours – and see if you have what it takes to join the Roman army. Learn marching drills and some of the tactics Roman soldiers used in battle.
Battle training will take place at:
11:00am
12:30pm
2:00pm
Look out for our roving Roman around the museum and discover more about everyday life in early Britannia.
