Skinningrove Heritage Walk, 27 August 2026
27th August 2026 - 27th August 2026
Join Land of Iron for the fourth of our guided heritage walks exploring the remains, landscapes and stories of East Cleveland’s ironstone mining industry.
This 2.5-mile walk will explore the streets and historic landmarks of Skinningrove, examining the development of the village and its relationship with the ironstone industry.
The first of many ironstone mines in Cleveland, Skinningrove Mine opened in 1848 and closed in 1958.
For more than 100 years, Skinningrove supplied ironstone to local iron and steelworks and helped jump-start the rise of the industrial powerhouse that would become the Cleveland Ironstone Industry.
Skinningrove was designed, built and developed by Pease & Partners, who were strict practitioners of Quaker beliefs. This had a profound impact on how local infrastructure was developed, with a focus on supporting the community and creating a hub where employees would have everything they could ever need.
During the walk, we will investigate the concept of the ‘model village’, exploring Skinningrove’s streets, historic landmarks and the ways in which Pease & Partners created a thriving community at the height of the Industrial Revolution.
The walk will begin at 10:00am from the Land of Iron car park.
The route is approximately 2.5 miles long and is expected to take around two and a half hours.
The walk takes place on flat, suburban ground and follows roads and pathways through Skinningrove.
Some sections of the route have limited or no footpath, and participants will need to take particular care around passing and oncoming traffic.
Comfortable walking shoes or other suitable footwear are recommended.
