Upleatham Mine Heritage Walk, 15 August 2026
15th August 2026 - 15th August 2026
Join Land of Iron for the second of four guided heritage walks exploring the remains, landscapes and stories of East Cleveland’s ironstone mining industry.
This four-mile circular walk begins at Errington Woods car park, off Grew Grass Lane, and explores the landscape around the former Upleatham Mine.
Upleatham Mine began working in 1851 and operated for more than 70 years.
During its lifetime, the mine employed around 500 men and boys. The ironstone seam beneath Upleatham was approximately 13 feet thick, and annual output averaged around 700,000 tonnes.
The mine closed in 1923 when the remaining ironstone was no longer considered economical to work.
During the walk, we will explore the history of the mine, the people who worked there and the surviving features of the site and surrounding landscape.
The walk will begin at 10:00am from the picnic area at Errington Woods car park.
The route is approximately four miles long and is expected to take between three and four hours.
It is predominantly flat but includes one moderate climb. Sections may become muddy after wet weather, so sturdy walking boots or other suitable footwear are strongly recommended.
There will be no access to clean running water during the walk, so please bring enough drinking water with you.
