A fresh selection of home-grown plants arrived at Land of Iron today, ready to find new homes while raising money for the museum.

The plants were grown and donated by members of our extended volunteer community. The wooden plant stand was also kindly bought and donated by one of our Front of House volunteers.

It is all part of a small, informal effort supported by the wider Land of Iron family. Volunteers, and sometimes their friends and relatives, bring in spare plants and cuttings they have grown at home. There is no fixed schedule: new plants simply arrive whenever someone has some to share.

The selection changes regularly and can include both garden plants and houseplants. Outdoor plants can be found outside the museum’s entrance, close to the site map and shelter, while houseplants are usually displayed inside at Reception.

Give a plant a new home

All the plants are available in return for a donation, with every penny going towards keeping Land of Iron open.

There is no fixed price, but a donation of around £2 per plant is suggested. If you would like to give a little more, every penny will help to support Land of Iron. Simply choose a plant and give whatever you feel is appropriate. Donations can be made at Reception by cash or card, although cash is preferred where possible.

The plants are available on an ad-hoc basis, so we cannot guarantee what will be waiting when you visit, but there may be something new each time.

Have spare plants or cuttings?

Until now, the plants have been contributed by volunteers and people connected with the museum, but we would be delighted to welcome suitable plant donations from local residents and visitors too.

If you have healthy spare plants or established cuttings that you would like to donate, please bring them to Reception during the museum’s opening hours.

It is a simple way to prevent surplus plants from going to waste, help them find new homes and raise a little more money to support Land of Iron.
