Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteering Opportunities at Land of Iron

We are looking for volunteers to support our newly refurbished visitor attraction, formerly the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum, located in the beautiful coastal village of Skinningrove.

Our team of volunteers is the lifeblood of our organisation and play a major role in every aspect of running the museum. Whether attending regular days each week in defined roles or lending an occasional hand, their contribution is invaluable. There are roles to suit all interests and abilities and full training is given for each area of service:

Volunteer receptionists

Our stunning reception area has a shop and information centre and is the first point of contact for our visitors. This role involves a variety of customer service tasks based in and around the reception desk. Volunteers might be greeting and advising visitors, answering the telephone, operating the till, refilling displays or serving customers in the shop. In-house training is given

Volunteer tour guides

Our Tour Guides lead small groups of customers around the museum, explaining spaces, artifacts and history, bringing our displays and collections to life with informative scripts and stories about the mines and the people who worked there. In-house training is given

Volunteer education assistants

Our education assistants work with school groups and the public to prepare and deliver environmental and history educational activities. These include field studies, historical role play, crafts, art, trails, talks/ school visits and more. In-house and external training is given.

Volunteer collections assistants

Working closely with our Collections Officer, the collections assistants help to clean, catalogue and display artefacts held in the museum. In-house training is given.

Maintenance volunteers

There is a wide range of work undertaken at the museum to keep it looking its best. This might be painting, landscaping or stock moving or miscellaneous all-hands-on-deck tasks such as Christmas decorations! This role might suit those who do not wish to volunteer on a regular day but could be called on to help with periodic tasks.

If you would like to learn more about volunteering opportunities at the museum, please contact us and our Volunteer Coordinator will be in touch.
